Currently, a business model and a minimum viable product are being developed under the <a href="https://uamemprende.es/">UAM Emprende</a> initiative of the <a href="http://uam.es/UAM/Home.htm?language=es">Autonomous University of Madrid</a>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">We performed a first <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdgEWhEZ6PuZJL--2SJf9BeKhyvircr3S61-wVga1893c-jwQ/viewform?usp=sf_link">survey</a> to analyze the problems of professionals in the tasks of fire prevention, surveillance, and extinguishing. The preliminary results of this survey are shown in the following infographics:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe height="720" src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QP9dmuwfaOBF8laH21G_6UxzTPTOHMTT/preview" width="640"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div>Then, we performed a second <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe6m3EYfYJfaNsgaXiyEcL0tJGmZl5DJW2QBlRJnaG43aPgaA/viewform?usp=sf_link">survey</a> to collect their opinions about different technologies that can help to solve these problems. The preliminary results of this survey are shown in the following infographics:</div><div><br /></div></div> <div style="text-align: center;"><iframe height="640" src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1klJ_zJ5YMLARUB_Zld3aNNmIAZFuZqV3/preview" width="640"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">We used this information to propose a concept of operation for applying drone swarms in firefighting activities. The proposed system is a fleet of quadcopters that individually are only able to visit waypoints and use payloads, but collectively can perform tasks of surveillance, mapping, monitoring, etc. We define three operator roles with different access to information and functions in the mission: mission commander, team leaders, and team members. These operators take advantage of virtual and augmented reality interfaces to get the information of the scenario and, in the case of the mission commander, control the drone swarm. The system is described in more detail in this <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3417/11/1/363">article</a>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3w4nSJC_k05JiaAAck2hp9QS41dm07rdE_BdIMFndBB1ALcOt4vOxh6MEriaVctiL2XjkYujxv9W8EkH8yf6OOBxslsCc3Dn0iqQ9HaqOjUD8XkTmNdIu1Yfmjl8KtfWtY4OYnbOC0YQ/s1100/applsci-11-00363-ag.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="560" data-original-width="1100" height="326" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3w4nSJC_k05JiaAAck2hp9QS41dm07rdE_BdIMFndBB1ALcOt4vOxh6MEriaVctiL2XjkYujxv9W8EkH8yf6OOBxslsCc3Dn0iqQ9HaqOjUD8XkTmNdIu1Yfmjl8KtfWtY4OYnbOC0YQ/w640-h326/applsci-11-00363-ag.webp" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>JJRGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07796729372233460843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-93914420793943073.post-14192988843718111782020-12-01T09:00:00.009-08:002021-10-27T01:58:55.451-07:00ROSEN 2020<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial;">I have taken part in the <a href="https://www.wur.nl/en/show/1st-International-Workshop-Drones-Software-Programming-ROSEN-2020-.htm">1st International Workshop Drones Software Programming (ROSEN 2020)</a>, organized by the <a href="https://www.wur.nl/en/Research-Results/Chair-groups/Social-Sciences/Information-Technology-Group.htm">Information Technology Group</a> of the <a href="https://www.wur.nl/en.htm">Wageningen University & Research</a>. The spanish public television has made a report about SwarmCity Project. The piece has appeared in the program Zoom Net of TVE 1, TVE Internacional and 24h. I am very proud to see the new result of our project. We have worked very hard to carry out this project, although we did not get the financial support from public and private organizations. In three years we have developed a city simulator, swarm intelligence and data fusion algorithms, and an adaptive and immersive interface. Additionally, we have published two articles in journals (Cognitive Systems Research and Personal and Ubiquitous Computing) and other two in conferences (IEEE IROS 2018 and IEEE PerCom 2019). Finally, some students have done their BSc and MSc theses in the context of SwarmCity Project. I hope this is not the end...</div>

I have received the extraordinary PhD award from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). This distinction is granted by the UPM to the best PhD thesis presented in this university during the last academic year. One more year I have attended the Santo Tomás de Aquino celebration, but this time the dress code has been a little bit more flexible. I am very happy with this last award for my PhD thesis, but as I usually say: the best things in this period have been the knowledge I got and the people I met.<br />

I started the year 2019 becoming unemployed. Then, I worked for the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), I taught "Design, Integration and Verification of Machines" at the Comillas Pontifical University, and I created my enterprise Aibot, at the same time. During this year I suffered the main problems of researchers in Spain: unemployment periods, rigged selection processes, project delays, lack of resources... However, I finished this year finding a great opportunity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have joined as Assistant Professor to the Department of Computer Science of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). During two years, I will teach "Software Analysis and Design Project" in the BSc in Computer Engineering (Spanish and English), while I will continue researching in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. I am very grateful to the people of the UAM for trusting me despite they did not know me before.</div>

Multiple robot missions imply a series of challenges for single human operators, such as managing high workloads or maintaining a correct level of situational awareness. Conventional interfaces are not prepared to face these challenges; however, new concepts have arisen to cover this need, such as adaptive and immersive interfaces. This paper reports the design and development of an adaptive and immersive interface, as well as a complete set of experiments carried out to establish comparisons with a conventional one. The interface object of study has been developed using virtual reality to bring operators into scenarios and allow an intuitive commanding of robots. Additionally, it is able to recognize the mission’s state and show hints to the operators. The experiments were performed in both outdoor and indoor scenarios recreating an intervention after an accident in critical infrastructure. The results show the potential of adaptive and immersive interfaces in the improvement of workload, situational awareness and performance of operators in multi-robot missions.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of the active challenges in multi-robot missions is related to managing operator workload and situational awareness. Currently, the operators are trained to use interfaces, but in the near future this can be turned inside out: the interfaces will adapt to operators so as to facilitate their tasks. To this end, the interfaces should manage models of operators and adapt the information to their states and preferences. This work proposes a videogame-based approach to classify operator behavior and predict their actions in order to improve teleoperated multi-robot missions. First, groups of operators are generated according to their strategies by means of clustering algorithms. Second, the operators’ strategies are predicted, taking into account their models. Multiple information sources and modeling methods are used to determine the approach that maximizes the mission goal. The results demonstrate that predictions based on previous data from single operators increase the probability of success in teleoperated multi-robot missions by 19%, whereas predictions based on operator clusters increase this probability of success by 28%. </div>

Robot cooperation is key in Search and Rescue (SaR) tasks. Frequently, these tasks take place in complex scenarios affected by different types of disasters, so an aerial viewpoint is useful for autonomous navigation or human tele-operation. In such cases, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in cooperation with an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) can provide valuable insight into the area. To carry out its work successfully, such as multi-robot system requires the autonomous takeoff, tracking, and landing of the UAV on the moving UGV. Furthermore, it needs to be robust and capable of life-long operation. In this paper, we present an autonomous system that enables a UAV to take off autonomously from a moving landing platform, locate it using visual cues, follow it, and robustly land on it. The system relies on a finite state machine, which together with a novel re-localization module allows the system to operate robustly for extended periods of time and to recover from potential failed landing maneuvers. Two approaches for tracking and landing are developed, implemented, and tested. The first variant is based on a novel height-adaptive PID controller that uses the current position of the landing platform as the target. The second one combines this height-adaptive PID controller with a Kalman filter in order to predict the future positions of the platform and provide them as input to the PID controller. This facilitates tracking and, mainly, landing. Both the system as a whole and the re-localization module in particular have been tested extensively in a simulated environment (Gazebo). We also present a qualitative evaluation of the system on the real robotic platforms, demonstrating that our system can also be deployed on real robotic platforms. For the benefit of the community, we make our software open source.</div>
